Top 5 Skills Every Great Social Media Manager Should Have

Nov 22, 2021

Just a few years ago, the role of social media manager didn’t exist. With it being a new role, the job description is still evolving. Currently, there is so much variety—that can be a good thing if you know what you’re doing. Unfortunately, when you’re a new social media manager with no experience, choosing the right learning path to gain new skills becomes overwhelming at times.

With so much information available, many new social media managers start asking questions like:

Should I offer graphic design?

Am I allowed to use templates?

Do I need to create a complete digital marketing strategy?

These questions are common and often overwhelm newcomers looking to break into the industry. Having multiple skills can never hurt you, but I’m here to help put your mind at ease and tell you that there are only five essential skills that every social media manager needs to be successful.

Let’s talk about them. Join the FREE Social Bosses Facebook Group

1.Project Management

Clients have business goals and, to achieve them, you will wear many hats while also managing a diverse team of professionals.  Project management is organizing people, resources, and time to complete a project within the given constraints. Social media managers who possess this skill are able to grow their businesses quicker than those who don’t.

To make project management simple, you can use tools such as Asana and Airtable to help you develop a social media strategy while keeping track of launches, promotions, budgets, deadlines, and more.

2.Creativity

New content won’t create itself and, as the social media manager, you’ll be responsible for keeping up with what’s trending. But, it should be noted that great content isn’t just about making trending memes or hashtags. You need to be creative enough to curate an engaging marketing campaign that merges those elements with information your target audience will truly value.

The best way to consistently duplicate your creativity is to follow the AIDA model for your audience’s journey.

3.Copywriting

Copywriting is such an underrated skill when it comes to content creation. Having amazing writing skills that sell your content is invaluable to creating social media posts that resonate with your audiences. Although the graphic design aspect of posts is extremely important, you’ll need to clarify visuals with hard-hitting copy in your captions.

Remember that the copy will vary depending on which social media channels you’re using. Twitter and Facebook are platforms where good copy is highly valued whereas Instagram and Pinterest are more visually focused. Still, having a good handle on your copy can elevate whatever content you’re pushing.

4.Organization

In my opinion, lack of organization is the number one cause for burnout amongst social media managers. It’s not uncommon for social media managers to oversee multiple social media accounts at one time. You have to keep track of posts, posting times, comments, DMs, and a whole host of other things.

For a long time, all of this was tracked in spreadsheets. Now, there are tools like Hootsuite and Sprout that help you stay organized. With these tools you have the ability to create content calendars, post content across platforms at the same time, engage with your audience, and more.

5.Analytical

At the end of the day, content creation should always have a measurable outcome. Every social media manager is responsible for setting up key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress and identify areas of growth. This is where having analytical skills can help you the most.

By analyzing the data, you’re able to see what’s working and converting. This allows you to continue curating content that will convert or sell on social media.

There are many skills you can learn to become an effective social media manager but starting with these five can help streamline your career. What other skills do you think social media managers need to possess to be successful?  Let’s discuss them in the comment section below.
